CILS 7th Annual Research Symposium was held on Friday, May 13th, 2011 at the University of British Columbia.
EventThe Centre for Intercultural Studies, in partnership with the Network of Centres and Institutes in Education (NCIE), is pleased to announce the launch of a new CILS website. With a fresh look and layout, the website aims to provide its visitors with easy access to CILS’ current news, upcoming events, research-based activities, as well as information about the key players involved in the CILS community.
For all the people at UBC who would love to improve in a foreign language, there is a new program supported by
CILS. In this new program, which welcomes learners of all languages, participants are paired based on their

In August 2010, Dr. Monique Bournot-Trites completed her two-year service as Director of CILS. CILS extends its thanks to Dr. Bournot-Trites for her dedicated leadership as it also warmly welcomes Andrew Scales, Academic Director of the UBC English Language Institute, as he steps into the role of CILS’s Director.

Dr. Stefka Marinova-Todd from the UBC School of Audiology and Speech Sciences discussed research findings which showed that bilingual children learn language at the same rate as monolingual children.(Thursday, April 28th, 12:30-2 p.m.).
EventDr. Murray J. Munro, Simon Fraser University, surveyed some of the key research findings on intelligibility and its relation to speech production and comprehension. He also highlighted the difficulties in operationalizing and assessing intelligibility as we strive to establish the most effective ways of achieving it.
EventDr. Caroline Rieger analyzed some of the cultural stereotypes used in language classes, as well as presented learning activities that explore stereotypical views, question and discourage stereotyping, and heighten cultural sensitivity.

News 1“How do we equip volunteers to facilitate ESL learning?” was the title of a 90-minute workshop presented by CILS and the UBC Learning Exchange ESL Conversation Program on May 1st, 2010 at the BC TEAL conference. Presenters Angelika Sellick (CILS), Mark Smith, John Nevens, and Denis Brisebois (UBC Learning Exchange) guided delegates in discussing their experiences and perspectives of training ESL volunteers.
